Examination of the Itch Response from the Raphides of the Fishtail Palm Caryota n~itis. SNYDER, D. S., HATFIELD, G. M., AND LAMPE, K. F. (1979). Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol. 48, 287-292. The raphides in the mature fruit of the fishtail palm Curyota mitis Lour. were isolated by mechanical separation. These were shown by X-ray crystal analysis to be calcium oxalate monohydrate (Whewellite). The application of an aqueous suspension of the raphides to intact human skin results in an immediate, severe itch sensation. An investigation of this phenomenon appears to indicate that this is due solely to a mechanical action of the calcium oxalate needle and not to the previously postulated action of organic toxins or enzymes introduced through the skin by the penetrating action of the raphides.

Identification and characterization of a pan-allergen profilin, a major allergen from Caryota mitis pollen.
BACKGROUND Caryota mitis is a common plant in tropical and subtropical areas. It produces larger amount of pollen, which has great potential for allergenicity in the pollination season. OBJECTIVE This study aims to identify the components of Caryota mitis pollen contributing to human allergic diseases. METHODS The sera from 20 patients with a positive skin prick test to Caryota mitis pollen...
متن کاملThe Case for Rainforest Foragers: The Starch Record at Niah Cave, Sarawak
A study of preserved starch grains from sedimentary sequences at Niah Cave, Sarawak, Borneo, reveals direct evidence for the use of rainforest plants rich in digestible carbohydrates. Plants identified include several species of Aroids (Alocasia sp., Cyrtosperma sp.), at least one species of yam (Dioscorea sp.), and the pith of sago palm (cf. Caryota mitis, Eugeissona utilis). Starch grains fro...

Effects of Caryota mitis profilin-loaded PLGA nanoparticles in a murine model of allergic asthma
BACKGROUND Pollen allergy is the most common allergic disease. However, tropical pollens, such as those of Palmae, have seldom been investigated compared with the specific immunotherapy studies done on hyperallergenic birch, olive, and ragweed pollens. Although poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been extensively applied as a biodegradable polymer in medical devices, it has rarely been uti...
متن کاملAlkaline Earth Metal Oxide Catalysts for Biodiesel Production from Palm Oil: Elucidation of Process Behaviors and Modeling Using Response Surface Methodology
Four different alkaline earth metal oxides i.e. MgO, CaO, SrO and BaO were used as heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production from palm oil. Effects of critical process variables i.e. reaction time, methanol to oil ratio and temperature were investigated. The results were then fitted to a historical design to study the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), to characterize interactions between...
